Hi Christopher, thank you for your comment!

In addition to getting more sleep in college, they also only had about 20 years of bad habits under their belts instead of 30 or 40. The effects of unhealthy habits accumulate slowly over time which is why I think most people don't realize the impact they have and choose to blame genetics or age when they suddenly encounter problems.

Good analogy and I totally agree with this, Vin. What you said in your comment about bouncing back reminds me of something I hear often from people. I've had friends in their 30s and 40s who, after a night of too many margaritas or too much wine, will say, "I'm getting old. I used to drink like this in college and I woke up feeling fine. Now I feel like crap." I always have to remind them that in college, they probably slept until 2:00 in the afternoon. Of course they felt fine. Now they have to get up at 7:00 with the kids, or to work, or whatever. That is the energy bank at work as well.

Hi Phil, thanks for your comment!

Staying out late with your friends is definitely understandable and there's nothing wrong with doing so as long as it's in moderation. Perhaps you just need to make more "deposits" before hand. :)

In regard to recovery time, I find that a lot of people blame this on age more so than they should. As I've improved my health, I've noticed that I can bounce back from a late night better than before. The more deposits you make through good habits, the better your health will be, and the more capacity you'll have for an occasional late night.

I like the idea of equating your energy levels to your bank account. It's very true--I often find myself staying late when I know I should be sleeping, either due to good conversation with friends and wine that runs late or an excellent book or the fact that I'm out on the town come the weekend and get carried away with good music or food. However, I always pay the price the next day, and it's taking me increasingly loner periods of time to recover. It's like writing a check without the funds--the next day you wake up and find that check has bounced, and your bank is charging you a whopping fine for not being fiscally savvy.
