Thanks, Arin!

I think it's quite fair to say that Monsanto is evil and I will be writing more about this in the future. I think it's important for people to know what companies like Monsanto are up to. Like you said, money and politics are always involved. This is a fact of life and it's important for people to consider this factor when making choices about their lifestyle and health.

Thanks for the study tips!

Vin,

Great article. A good source of info for those who don't know much about GMO and a good refresher for all of us who forgot why Monsanto is so evil. Hehehe.

Sadly, everything boils down to $$$$ and power. If these things are involved, then politics alongside large organizations play a big roll that cannot be stopped. However, with some cleaver thinking, who knows what can be accomplished.

(Hope your studies are going well. I put some study suggestions on what to read and emphasize just after your comment on my blog so check it out. Hope it helps).

Hi Mianne, thanks for your comment!

I'm glad you emphasized the risk of making irreversible changes to the natural gene pool. This is one of my biggest concerns regarding genetically modified foods. In regard to the companies pushing their genetically modified products, the politics behind it are bad enough, but it really bothers me when they claim to be doing it for the good of humanity.

Food Inc. is a great movie and I definitely <a href="http://naturalbias.com/9-reasons-why-you-must-see-food-inc/" rel="nofollow">recommend that everyone see it</a>. Some people have said that it's too intense, but I think it's just what many people need to see.

Thanks again for an amazing and well researched article. The whole concept of genetic engineering has always sent shivers up my spine from the first day I heard about it.

People talk about 'hoping' we're not going to look back in the future and regret allowing this to happen and I agree with you, I think there's already enough reason for regret and to stop all GE food now. The thing is, if and when it gets out of hand, it will be too late. The spread of GE crops around the world isn't a mere product that can be recalled. Once it's out in nature, that's it. It's there for good and there will be no way of getting rid of it.

Our lives, environment and future will be affected and changed forever. I don't think anyone on this planet has the right to do that, no matter what the reasons. These money hungry corporations are only interested in making more money and keeping their shareholders happy. They could care less about the environment and the future of the people on this planet. The motivations are all screwed up.

I do what I can to avoid ALL GE food and I think we have reasonable labelling here in Australia (as far as I know). I avoid US foods at all costs because, well, it rarely seems to have anything to do with food at all. Just watch the documentary movie '<a href="http://www.foodincmovie.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Food Inc</a>' and make up your own minds.

With the potential for global catastrophy with GE food, there is no one in my mind that can even begin to put forward a valid argument to support it.

Hi Wee, thanks for your comment!

Genetically modified foods aren't labeled here in the U.S. either, and the industry has even fought hard (and unfortunately, quite successfully) to discourage food manufacturers from labeling products as GMO free.

I think there are already a number of reasons unrelated to genetically modified foods for us to have the type of regret you mention, but we seem to not have learned much from it. I too hope that genetically modified foods don't become more of a regret than they arguably already are.

Wow, thanks for the comprehensive coverage on genetically modified food. Sadly, sometimes there are no labels indicating that the foods have been genetically modified, at least in my part of the world. So if one wants to avoid genetically modified food, it can be quite tough. I don't think we know enough about the repercussions of genetically modified food on the environment as well as health to do it on a mass scale. I just hope we don't have to look back 60 years later and regret what we've done to ourselves and the earth.

Hi Jon,

That statement is actually fairly common knowledge and is discussed in the following biology textbook:

Concepts of Biology by Sylvia S. Mader, 2009 pages 224-225.

For additional references, here's an article from the BBC discussing <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4605202.stm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">bioluminescent pigs</a>, an article from Forbes discussing <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2001/07/26/0726gfp.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">bioluminescent mice</a>, and a Wikipedia page discussing <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alba_%28rabbit%29" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Alba the bioluminescent rabbit</a>. Each of these animals gained their bioluminescence from GFP gene of a jellyfish which is an obvious way for scientists to confirm that the DNA of one organism can be transferred to and expressed in another.

The shear guillability of this statement boggles the mind "For example, the gene in jellyfish that’s responsible for bioluminescence has been used to engineer pigs, mice, and rabbits that glow in the dark."

You have all these references in here, I'd love to see the reference for that statement!!
