The politicians are at it again and have drafted another piece of so called food safety legislation that threatens the future of organically and sustainably produced food.
Bill H.R. 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, proclaims to “amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to improve the safety of food in the global market, and for other purposes.” Despite the seemingly good intention of this bill, the regulations that it aims to put into place are not the type of measures that would truly improve the safety of our food supply. Unfortunately, they’re much more likely to worsen it.

Meat, poultry and eggs are excellent sources of nutrition that support and promote optimal health. However, most people don’t realize that the selection of these foods typically found in supermarkets is of poor quality and is likely to originate from animals that were raised in horrendous conditions.
The meat, poultry and eggs that come from factory farms are often contaminated with antibiotics, pesticides and hormones and are likely to contain unbalanced and substandard levels of nutrients. Furthermore, when you purchase these foods, you’re contributing to animal cruelty and are supporting an extremely large and influential industry that’s harming the environment and pushing smaller farmers out of business.

It’s not easy being a pizza lover who doesn’t tolerate gluten well. Fortunately, I’m not the only one and gluten free pizza is getting better and becoming more popular.

Despite the fact that humans have evolved on red meat, it’s been unduly regarded as an unhealthy food. While some of this is based on misconception, the health benefits of red meat truly depend on the livestock it comes from and how they’re raised.
As the most popular and widely available type of red meat, beef has been targeted with much of the criticism. While the beef from conventionally raised cattle deserves some of this criticism, grass fed beef is an excellent source of nutrition that promotes good health.

While the media frenzy surrounding the so called swine flu pandemic is causing many people to panic, we have much more serious problems to worry about such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Despite the fact that these diseases are killing people in much larger proportions than any pandemic we’ve had in modern times, many of us have grown numb to their frightening prevalence.
In a single day, more people die in the United States alone from any one of these diseases than the total number of people who’ve died worldwide from the recent outbreak of swine flu. What we should really be concerned about is not a pandemic of swine flu, but rather an epidemic of poor health!

Question: You often praise the benefits of natural foods and products. Are there any cases where processed foods or unnatural products are equivalent or better?
In most cases, the health related distinction between natural and processed foods or products lies in the body’s ability to recognize and appropriately respond to the substances they contain. Humans have spent millions of years adapting to the conditions of nature and improving the ability to survive on the resources that it provides. As such, the body typically doesn’t react favorably to any unnatural substance that didn’t exist during this long period of adaptation.

Chemicals and Your Health
As most people know, chemical toxins are a problematic aspect of modern life that we’re forced to deal with on a daily basis. While small levels of occasional exposure may not cause much harm, decades of such exposure will cause these toxins to accumulate in your body and this is one of the most notorious causes of cancer and many other unpleasant health problems.

Provoked by high rates of skin cancer, many people avoid the sun as much as possible and cover themselves with sunscreen before spending any time outdoors. Sadly, these people are actually increasing their risk for cancer and other diseases.
For millions of years, humans have spent many hours out in the sun each day without the protection of sunscreen. As such, it seems completely backwards for this natural and essential part of life to be considered dangerous. A closer look at the issue reveals that it is indeed backwards and that the fear of sun exposure is the real problem.

Everyone keeps talking about the benefits of fish oil and krill oil, but when I take either of these, I have trouble sleeping. Any suggestions?
Fish oil and krill oil are popular health supplements primarily because of their fatty acid content. While fat doesn’t deserve the villainous reputation it’s been given, most people know about the importance of the omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Because they can’t be produced by the body, these essential fatty acids must be supplied through diet.
