Food Label ConfusionWith the ridiculous and misleading claims that are made on the packaging of many foods, it can be difficult to differentiate the truth from devious marketing. This is important because the failure to make this distinction can have a significant impact on your health and wellbeing.

To help you recognize the deceiving marketing that’s commonly found on food labels, I went grocery shopping and came home with a number of great examples. Aside from the obvious reason of it being unhealthy, I ordinarily don’t buy this type of food because it supports industrial agriculture, and in turn, supports irresponsible and inhumane farming practices. However, if I’m able to help steer you away from these foods, then it will be for a good cause.

The following are some of the most ridiculous and misleading food labels that quickly drew my attention in the grocery store.

Smart Choices ProgramThe food industry claims to be doing us a favor by implementing a new food labeling system that will help us make better choices at the grocery store. However, a closer look reveals that it’s probably nothing more than a marketing campaign.

This labeling system is known as the Smart Choices Program and the foods that it endorses bear a badge with a green check mark. Despite the name of the program, some of the foods that proudly display the green check mark aren’t smart choices at all.

FullBarPart of the reason why people have so much trouble eating well, losing weight, and being healthy is the marketing of products that gives them false hope of a quick and easy solution. FullBar is such a product, and unfortunately, it steers people away from the truth about nutrition, health, and weight loss.

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Bud Light vs Coke ClassicBeer and soda are two of the most popular and unhealthy beverages available today. They’re both associated with a long list of health risks, but which one is worse?

For the past two decades, Americans have been drinking just as much beer as they’ve been drinking coffee and milk. Soda consumption is even worse and typically doubles that of any other beverage. In fact, many people drink more soda than water. Needless to say, a majority of the population is harming their health by drinking a significant amount of these beverages. As such, choosing which one is worse is a matter of determining the lesser of two evils.

How Sugar Can Ruin Your Life

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Dangers of SugarIf you think it’s an exaggeration to say that something as common as sugar or refined carbohydrates can ruin your life, perhaps you should give more consideration to the excessive amounts of it that many people are consuming and the harmful effects that it can have on one’s health.

It only takes a quick look through most major grocery stores to notice the overwhelming selection of processed and packaged foods and the much smaller selection of natural whole foods such as unrefined meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Much of this processed food contains unhealthy amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates as well as unnatural additives that are potentially harmful. Because processed foods are cheap to produce, have a long shelf life, and are specifically designed to taste good, they’re favored by both the food industry and the general public. The overwhelming abundance and availability of these foods is a clear indication that they’re a staple of the modern diet, and this is very likely to be a major factor in the prevalence of many life altering health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, depression, heart disease, and cancer.

In a single day, more people die in the United States alone from any one of these diseases than the total number of people who’ve died worldwide from the recent outbreak of swine flu. What we should really be concerned about is not a pandemic of swine flu, but rather an epidemic of poor health!

Are You Riding the Blood Sugar Rollercoaster?

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Blood Sugar RollercoasterBlood sugar is vital to human function and must be consistently kept at a steady level to maintain good health. The failure to do so is a primary cause of many modern health complaints and diseases.

Blood sugar is the glucose that circulates in the blood stream and provides cells with much of the energy they need to function. It’s most commonly obtained through the digestion of food and is especially important to the brain and nervous system. Because of the many critical functions that depend on it, and because it’s toxic in excessive concentrations, blood sugar levels that are too low or too high can be extremely dangerous and are dealt with by the body in an urgent manner.
