Hi Kelley,

The primary selling point of Splenda is that it's not well digested and is therefore eliminated through urine or feces. This is a selling point because if you can't absorb it, you can't gain weight from it. However, many people have disputed this, but either way, it's obvious that a large amount of it will be processed by the kidneys. It's tough to say what effect this could have on the function of the kidneys, but I think it's safe to regard it as an unnecessary burden. In addition, research on rats has shown that large doses of Splenda cause kidney enlargement.1 Based on this, I think it would make a lot of sense to avoid it. As with any artificial additive, it's generally best to avoid unnatural substances anyway due to their potential for unknown effects.

I was just diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease, stage 3. I'd like to get more information on how Splenda affects the kidneys. I use a lot of it every day, so I suspect I'm going to have to stop using it at all.

Thank you,
Kelley Fulks
