Hi Jacqueline, I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying the site! The Adirondacks are definitely a bit lost in time. It was a bit of a shock at first, but it turned out to be a great learning experience as well as a valuable opportunity to relax. I think it's great that you had the opportunity to appreciate this as a kid!

Thanks, Stephen! Me too, and I still enjoy active vacations. However, I think we all need to make an effort to enjoy at least one relaxing vacation per year, especially considering how hectic normal life is for most people.

Definitely try the shoes! If you do, let us know what you think.

I'm really enjoying your blog. I grew up near the Adirondacks and can immediately understand how relaxing your time must have been. It's a land that's a bit lost in time -- that's a good thing!

Vin, love this post and it matches my experience on my recent vacation. I used to go, go, go on vacation but I'm getting into relaxing vacations. I think it's because I'm old. LOL! I'm seriously considering your shoe recommendations from that post a few weeks ago. My feet are too tender to hike with them though :-)

Thanks for the comments guys!

Rachelle - I'm already a big fan of simplicity and I reminded myself too! :)

Sharona - Bug spray didn't even enter my mind while packing. Next time I go on a trip like this, I'll definitely look into natural alternatives before hand. Thanks for the suggestions!

Raine - I used to dislike "layaround" vacations as well until I learned the value of relaxing. I definitely enjoy active vacations that involve sports or absorbing a new culture or location, but it's a much different kind of trip that usually increases the need for relaxation when you get home rather than providing it.

This is great insight you have shared with us about the value of vacations. Once my neighbor told me that she and her husband don't enjoy "layaround" vacations that some people take where they go someplace, whether it be to a hotel or cruise on a boat and sit around being entertained by everything and everyone around them. Some how this comment came to mind when I was reading your post about vacations being more about really getting away from stress and factors present in your normal everyday life, and that even though we sometimes don't believe we can survive without all of our modern conveniences - computers, cell phones, televisions, video games, etc., being away from those things can actually improve and enrich your life. After all, for thousands and thousands of years, people have lived without these conventions, and it never seemed to do anyone harm. In fact, I believe, it has quite the opposite effect.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, relieved some stress, and hopefully recharged yourself as well. :)

It sounds like you had a nice change of pace.
It surprises me that you didn't take some of the natural bug sprays along with you.
They are not as powerful as DEET but much, much safer.
Your health food store should carry a Neem product. Neem oil by itself smells too repulsive to use, but they make combos that make the scent more tolerable.

I believe Mercola also has a natural bug spray. Check out the stuff online or just see what the health store has to offer. Many people like Skin So Soft by Avon, but I tried it..even sprayed it right on the mosquito perched on my leg..it did nothing for me.

So happy to hear you enjoyed the family vacation last week, Vin. As usual, you have reminded us of the importance to remember what is important in life! Simplicity is a beautiful thing, especially in our complicated world. . .thanks, Vin!
