It's amazing how good it feels to have clear nostrils. I personally like to use the neti-pot before going to bed; it allows me to get a deeper sleep. I also love using it before meditation. Feels so good to wash out the sinuses. Glad i finally got one. The end of the spout doesn't go far into your nose at all, and you're only pouring water <em>out</em> of the pot. Nothing goes back in. If you really want to wash it, I would rinse it with hot water and maybe a little bit of natural soap.
