Hi Krill, thanks for sharing your experience. Although I don't support vegetarianism, I'm happy to hear that you're making an effort to improve your diet and are feeling better. Congratulations!

I have had several health problems over the years and I have recently started eating 90% vegetarian and I love it. I have never felt better in my life. I have been consuming everything I can read on the topic. If you can’t go 100% veggies then flexitarian is the way to go! I would like to work my way to 100% whole foods but it’s a struggle.

Thanks again, Roz!

Yes, it's a shame how Monsanto's aggressive business tactics are impacting our welfare. It's a frustrating topic that I'll be writing more about in the near future. If you really want to see how ruthless they are and how little concern they have for the general public, check out Seeds of Deception by Jeffrey Smith or The World According to Monsanto.

Within the next few years, I plan to start growing some of my own food and I'm looking forward to it!

Hi Vin, your site is absolutely excellent! Thanks for the follow on Twitter which led me to it

I love the ridiculous food labels! Here in the UK, one of the most ridiculous things is that we have leaflets in doctor's surgeries that are actually provided by the Sugar Bureau and which promote jelly beans as "healthy carbohydrates"!

On the GM issue, I was horrifed to see the bullying tactics employed by Monsanto in "Food, Inc." They seem quite happy to destroy anyone who stands in their way.

It does make you want to grow and farm all your own stuff (although you could still get sued for patent infringement when some of Monstanto's crops blew onto yours... )

Oh well, as you say, people are becoming much more knowledgable about these issues. Thank goodness for the Internet and thanks for your great articles.

I'm glad you liked Alfie's video. You'll be pleased to hear that she supplements her diet with raw, wild mouse on a regular basis!

Thanks, Roz!

I agree and think there's a delicate balance between taking responsibility and the government and food manufacturers concealing important information. Genetically engineered foods are an excellent example of this. For a number of years, very few people even knew that they were eating them. Now, although government is still favoring the health of the biotech industry over the health of the general public, there's no excuse to not be aware of the risks. Same goes with trans fat and the foods that typically contain them.

Either way, I think the real issue is people reading information like this and not making the effort to protect themselves. This is where responsibility really comes into play.

Yes, a diet based on natural and traditional foods is the easiest way to not only avoid undesirable ingredients, but to also obtain an abundance of good nutrition.

Great video! It's amazing how much smarter animals are than us when it comes to food selection. Many farmers have noticed the same thing with their livestock when given the option of genetically modified and natural varieties of the same food.

Great article! Although we have to take responsibilty for ourselves, I do think the government is to blame as well. I am in the UK but it is just the same here.

I think the problem is that the government gives the impression that they are looking after our health, so people who don't do their own research tend to follow government recommendations. However, I have concluded that these are driven more by commerical interests than health considerations. You can see this in the case of aspartame, statins, trans fats and many more...

And it's hard to make informed choices when "zero trans fats" doesn't actually mean zero trans fats!

I guess the key is to stick to food that bears some resemblance to what our ancestors used to eat.

For a bit of light relief, have a look at my cat Alfie checking out Elmlea fake cream (full of hydrogentated veg oils)

Thanks, Flounders!

I'm not familiar with What to Eat, but I respectfully disagree about The China Study being a good resource. Although I appreciate people's choices to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, I don't think it's in the best interest of their health. In regard to The China Study, this article from the Weston A. Price Foundation suggests how the author makes a number of flawed assumptions and interpretations.

Nice job on information. Just finished "China Study" and "What to Eat", by nestle. These go a little further along with info on sugar, dairy etc. Good reads for follow up-info or further reading.

Hi Trevor,

Simply look for the word "hydrogenated" and avoid any products that list it. In most cases you'll see "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil", "partially hydrogenated soybean oil", or "partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil."

When looking for hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils on an ingredients label what exactly does it say? Does it say "partially-hydrogenated oil" or is that oil going to have a specific name? I'm going to head to the grocery store later today so I'm curious what it will be. I definitely want to get better at reading through all the bs on the label.
