And as for #7, Eat in a Natural Rhythym, Mexicans tend to eat their large meal of the day about 2- 3 PM and then have a meal of two or three small tacos at night. We try to do this from time to time but old habits die hard and most gringos still socialize at dinnertime about 7PM.

Thank you, Jonathan!

I've been shocked a number of times by the poor training and eating habits of some professional athletes. Phelps' "<a href="http://naturalbias.com/michael-phelps-is-a-dope/" rel="nofollow">gold medal diet</a>" is a great example.

This is something that really bothers me because I consider athletic performance to be one of the ultimate expressions of optimal health, but many of today's athletes are surviving on their talent in spite of their poor habits.

Hi Vin, these were all excellent points. I am so glad you included #5. Don’t Use Exercise to Compensate for Diet. So many people think that if they get enough exercise they can eat anything they want and still be healthy. What they fail to realize is that the greater the physical demand, the more important it is to supply the body with quality fuel.

Even elite athletes make this mistake using refined foods to keep their calories up so they can continually over-train. Refined foods cause inflammation which is at the source of untold health problems. Thanks for your well written, scientifically sound, common sense approach Vin, you really do an excellent job.

Hi Anna, thanks for your comment! I'm glad to hear that you and your husband are enjoying the benefits of quality food and a relaxing atmosphere! Hopefully you'll be able to find a way to incorporate more of that into your lives while in BC.

I have to agree with most points, especially 3 and 4. We spend the winter in a small village in Mexico where most of the food we eat is very fresh and it certainly is a relaxing place.

We live in northern BC so other than our garden produce most veggies and fruit have a long distance to travel during the summer/fall months.

My husband is diabetic and his blood sugar levels are much lower once we arrive here even though he tends to eat a fair bit of fruit and a few tortillas, not to mention cerveza.

Thank you! I absolutely agree that we should seek the freshest produce possible. Some people even argue that locally grown produce that's sprayed with pesticides is better than organic produce that's shipped cross country. Part of the logic behind this is that small local farmers don't use pesticides as heavily. While I think this is a reasonable perspective, I'd rather sacrifice freshness if necessary to avoid unnatural chemicals, even if they exist in smaller amounts.

If fresh organic produce isn't available, frozen organic produce is good option because the food is usually frozen shortly after being picked.

Hi Wee, thanks for your comment!

I'm glad you mentioned this because I really hope everyone realizes that these tips aren't just for weight loss. It's just that many of them happen to address some of the misconceptions that are holding people back from losing weight.

An excellent piece with a lot of in-depth information.
I particularly agree with point 3 about eating quality food. As well as looking at organic produce for the best health benefits, I think we also need to take into account the fact that fresh produce starts to lose its nutritional value as soon as it is picked. So we should be consuming fruit and vegetables in particular within a short time of picking, not after they have been sitting in the shop for days.
Does anyone else agree?

Though I don't have excess weight to lose, I find the tips here relevant for anyone looking to live healthily, especially point 5 (Don’t Use Exercise to Compensate for Diet). Many people mistakenly thought that they can eat anything they want as long as they exercise. But, the fact is most people either do not exercise hard enough to burn off the excess calories or their diet is so full of junk that exercise alone is not enough to override the harm done. Thanks for the great post as usual, Vin!
