Celebrating Your Potential on Independence Day
by Vin Miller
Independence Day signifies the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the recognition of the United States as an independent nation. While we can all appreciate the significance of this, few of us recognize how critical independence is to realizing our potential to live rewarding lives.
Independence implies the freedom to make our own choices, live according to our own values, and do so without relying upon others. Each fourth of July, we celebrate the independence of America and the freedom that it provides us as individuals. It’s an excellent time to also appreciate the opportunities that this freedom creates and to reflect on how sincere our efforts are to gain value from it. Without striving to discover and reach our potential, the independence and freedom that we’re blessed to have are nothing more than a wasted opportunity.
Are You Using Your Independence to Live Life with Purpose?
Many of us reflect on the lives of celebrities, millionaires, and professional athletes with a sense of envy. Even though many of these people are often much more troubled and unhappy than we realize, we automatically assume that their lives are much better than ours.
Modern society has conditioned us to confuse happiness with money and fame. Although these factors certainly make it easier to live a fulfilling life, they certainly don’t provide fulfillment on their own. In fact, people who live simple lives with a clear purpose are often much happier than the wealthy celebrities and millionaires that we envy.
Having purpose in your life keeps you motivated and excited to achieve meaningful goals, and when you do, it provides a strong sense of fulfillment. While it would be great to win the lottery, being able to find meaning in your life is a much more precious gift. The independence we each enjoy as citizens of America, or any other nation that promotes freedom, increases our potential to make this gift a reality.
How to Embrace Independence and Add Purpose to Your Life
In today’s convenience driven society, it’s easier than ever to live life as if you’re on autopilot, become more depressed as time slips away, and never experience the fulfillment that we’re all capable of achieving. As such, finding meaning and purpose in your life can be a difficult and trying task. However, without enduring this process, you’ll never be able to reach your potential and you’ll be left watching as life continues to pass you by.
We all have meaning and purpose in our lives, but the challenge is recognizing it. You can address this challenge by assessing what your passions are, what you spend most of your leisure time doing, and what tends to draw your strongest interest. By connecting this with your personal values, it creates the potential for a much more fulfilling existence. Finding a way to support yourself through the alignment of your passions and values will allow you to devote much more of your life to achieving purposeful goals. In turn, this will eliminate the dissatisfaction of needing to support yourself by trading time for money at a job that doesn’t add meaning to your life.
Although this is much easier said than done, you’ll never accomplish it if you don’t try! An excellent book that will help you figure out how to make a career out of your passions is Career Renegade: How to Make a Great Living Doing What You Love by Jonathan Fields.
How Your Health Relates to Independence and Purpose
Although the pursuit of achieving goals and experiencing fulfillment is energizing in itself, it also consumes and requires a great deal of energy. Regardless of how motivated you are, you won’t be able to accomplish much without excellent health. You simply won’t have the energy or the mental clarity, and this will have a significant impact on your motivation. Even if your health is average, which isn’t all that great by today’s standards, your ability to achieve your goals will still be impaired.
Optimal health will provide you with the energy, mental clarity, and focus that you’ll need to maximize the effectiveness of your efforts. In addition, it will allow you to enjoy life more thoroughly by facilitating better moods and protecting you from the pain and limitation of poor health and disease.
Independence allows us to take responsibility for our health by proactively educating ourselves so that we can make informed decisions that will promote fulfillment rather than emptiness. With the amount of deceptive marketing and health related misinformation that exists today, which is made evident by the prevalence of poor health and disease, it’s more important than ever to take responsibility for your health and develop a stronger awareness of the impact that your daily habits are having on your life.
Improving Your Health to Pursue Purpose
To achieve the excellent health that you’ll need to live with passion and pursue fulfillment, you may need to make some simple but significant changes to your diet, sleep habits, levels of stress, exercise habits, and even your perspective on life and how much sun exposure you get. I cover each of these topics extensively in my free e-course. If you’re serious about making a change in your life, I highly recommend that you sign up for it.
Don’t Take Your Independence for Granted
Although most of us are fortunate to live in a “free country”, the boundaries of what we’re free to do can be vague. For example, NAIS and other forms of proposed food safety legislation are threatening our access to naturally farmed food and we’re even seeing children being subjected to mandatory chemotherapy. As if that’s not bad enough, vaccinations are becoming more enforced, and with overly hyped illnesses such as swine flu, mandatory vaccinations may soon become a reality as well. Although many of us take our independence for granted, our freedom is by no means a guarantee. As such, appreciate the freedom you have and stand up for your right to maintain it!

Excellent article Vin. I can personally attest to the fact that poor health hampers your ability to enjoy what you have or what you want to do. It should be obvious anyway. You may know what you want to do or what you need to do and simply not have the energy to do it. That’s sad, trust me!
Hi Stephen, thanks for your comment! Yes, it is sad and I can attest to it from personal experience as well. That’s why I emphasize it so much. It’s hard to realize how unpleasant it is until you’ve actually experienced it.
