Hi Nakai,

I suggest using the resources mentioned in the article to search for the responsible local farmers who have the lowest prices. Buy as much organic produce and pasture raised meat as you can afford to, and for the rest of it, you’ll have to do the best you can at local grocery stores. Also, use the list mentioned in the article to see which of the foods you eat tend to have higher pesticide levels. Based on this, you can prioritize which foods to buy in organic form or avoid altogether.

Also, make sure that you’re not wasting too much money on processed foods. Whole foods, even if not organic, are almost always better than processed foods.

I would love to be able to buy all organic foods, however… we live on one income and barely make ends meet. We have cut so much out of our budget that we only pay for the necessities and are still broke. Do you have any suggestions for me, so that we can afford organic food?

I did not realize there were that many ways to get access to organic foods for cheaper. Now I don’t think there is any reason for me not to purchase organic foods. If I have to spend a little more money to live a little better then so be it.

Raine – I absolutely agree. Even if it costs extra, it’s certainly a worth while investment.

Abby – I’m appalled too, but it’s great to know that there are dietitians like yourself who are more interested in sensible information than what the food industry wants us to believe.

I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 12, follow a gluten free and whole food diet, and do my best to eat all organic, however, I subsist on disability payments (700.00 per month), and foodstamps (I get only 200.00 per month). Often, eating healthily is cost-prohibitive, and buying from local farmers isn’t much easier, being that I live in Manhattan (even the prices at the farmer’s market are high). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Great article. As a registered dietitian with the American Dietetic Association (although I’m letting that license expire next year!) I’m appalled by their stance on organic food, among many other things. I appreciate your commitment to spreading the word about what real nutrition is.

what these huge componies are doing is diabolicle.all my life i was aware of things like this and i was told that none of it was true and i should grow up. now who needs to get real?.we can not just be passive campers on this issue or we will all be enslaved more so then we allreddy are with debt and intrest.

I am heading to Home Depot right now and am growing my own garden. Thank god I live in Florida; helps my plants get mucho sunlight for growing!
