Thank you Stephen and meatlessmama for your comments! You guys are absolutely right. Far too many young people, including children, have neglected their bodies to the point of developing physical limitations. Meatlessmama, you couldn't have said it any better. You're never too old or too young to make a change for the better.

Unfortunately, today even lots of kids can't do those things due to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. Senior citizens think it's just a normal part of aging to not be
able to rise unassisted from a chair or reach down and cut their own toenails.

Vin is right, we all need to strive to function at a high level. You are never too young or too old to start.

Vin, this was excellent. I also disagree with Don and take the old-age perspective. However many people who are not 70 or 80 cannot do those things either. Just look around at how many obese and physically dysfunctional people there are at 50 or 60. I see 50 year-old's for whom walking to a parking lot is obviously stressful.

Thanks for your comment, Don!

I completely agree that discomfort should be enough incentive on it's own for someone to take care of their body and maintain their physical capabilities. However, for many people it's not, and the cause of the discomfort (muscle imbalance, weakness, stiffness, etc.) will often get worse and advance to more advanced stages of limitation.

When you say that most of us won't get to the point of not being able to participate in simple physical activities, I'm not sure I agree, but perhaps we're looking at this from different perspectives. I don't know too many people who are in their 70s or 80s that can go on a hike, easily walk up a flight of stairs, or even sit down in the grass and play with kids. Society may accept this as normal, but I don't!

Members of primitive cultures who are able to reach such an advanced age through the avoidance fatal accidents and infections may not be able to hunt, but they are still perfectly capable of basic physical function and would probably have no problem hiking or getting back up after sitting on the ground. In fact, research has shown that they still participate in gathering activities which could easily be considered hiking.

I'm taking action <em>now</em> to maintain my physical capabilities at the highest capacity possible for as long as I can, and within reason, I plan to be able to engage in any type of physical activity I'd like to well into my old age. Just like a healthy diet, maintaining and improving my physical function is a regular part of my lifestyle.

Hi Vin,

Interesting spin on the definition of an athlete. Imagine if you could not being able to go hiking, play a pickup game of some sort, or a not even being able to play in the back yard with your children. Most of us will not get this point but almost all of us will get to the point that we won't do these activities without discomfort. This leads to not fully enjoying them and for some not doing them at all anymore. It doesn't have to be this way. Follow Vins advice people. Take action now.
