Reactive approach to good appearance or proactive/holistic approach?

Which would you take?

This article explains in depth the downsides of the reactive and obsessive approach.

Our ego causes friction to our ability to laser-focus. We fail to look deeper on to facts because of that. To laser-focus, open mind and intuition is required.

I used to obsess about my appearance. I now ask myself and others WHY?
Are you sick and tired of dieting, of losing weight, and then gaining it all back? Are you ready to finally take a break from the endless cycle of not-quite-good-enough? Get ready to look in the mirror and love what you see. You can feel great about your body and yourself, and you can start right now, without changing a single thing.
Do I have you intregued? Well I learned this from a book called Love Your Body, Love Your Life by Sarah Maria.

Thanks, Brian! Yes, the best medicine is simply taking good care of yourself. It's ironic how people will do crazy things to lose weight and look younger when simply taking better care of themselves would make it happen naturally and easily.

I love your conclusion; I was thinking it the whole way through your article. Almost everything you mentioned is in some way a mask for an underlying poor health habit. Eat good healthy foods and you shouldn't have to worry as much about calories or excessive exercise... or weight loss pills for that matter. Not only that but good foods will keep you looking younger as you age making Botox less enticing. The best medicine is good nutrition.

Thank you all for your comments!

Stephen - I completely agree, vibrant health is indeed a beautiful thing!

Robin - Yes, too few people realize that being at ideal body weight is a characteristic of excellent health and a healthy lifestyle. Cutting calories and overexercising are merely compensats for this lack of knowledge. The emphasis on appearance in America certainly doesn't help.

ægil - There are few things that I am as passionate about as learning. As such, I completely agree. Learning is also a key aspect of taking responsibility for your health and your life in general. Without taking this responsibility, the direction of your life will be dictated by others. Another very important aspect of learning is keeping an open mind which is necessary to gain value from the other side of the coin that you mention.

I think being proactive is a great lesson from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I actually wrote an article based on this book that you might enjoy. I related Covey's 7 habits to health living. The 7 Habits of Highly Healthy People.

(continued)
So I excuse any person who is not well-informed or deceived because I accept it, but as always, we must take action minus the obsession upon learning!

Vin I have to tell you, I feel infinitely better without obsession! I link no obsession to being proactive according to Covey's book. We should also not be obsessed about being proactive, because that is beating yourself for any unpleasant thing you do. While you improve a thing simply accept any bumps then continue!

[Failure is inevitable, it is simply part of the success because success starts right at the moment you take action (from zen habits, in my own words).]

Yes, Vin you nailed it again!

The biggest problem is that many people are not correctly informed or just don't have the initiative to learn. Some people, I think have overblown egos, so they think they can stop learning when they successfully finish higher education. Just who will we be without the passion to learn?

Some people just think they should put all their faith on one side of the coin (usually wrong) rather than the other side. Our intuition and critical thinking should guide us. I believe my own intuition guided me! Some people simply get something without doing their own research, they instead trust somebody to research for them (like putting faith on the media), so sometimes they become slaves to the media.

Yes, Vin I believe you have helped people address the 'issues' above!

Hi Vin, I've been blessed to be thin and willowy all my life. Regardless, I have seen people all around me do the all of the things you mention here and more just to lose weight.

I think that so many people separate weight loss from healthy. Weight loss is seen as a separate thing. People want to lose weight but continue to eat crap. And if they approached weight loss from the point of view of being healthy, (eating and exercising in a healthy way) they would lose weight and stay fit and trim more easily. I have eaten healthy since I was 25 years old and I think it's why I stay trim and fit. I think if I ate what I see so many people eat I'd probably put on weight as well. Who knows. But I do feel that in American culture there is too much emphasis on the wrong thing.

Great post, one so many need to read.

Nice article Vin. I think this paragraph says it all beautifully:

"A truly attractive person is one who has a balanced and grounded perspective on life that builds admirable character, is based more on emotional fulfillment than materialism, and motivates them to pursue the optimal health that will fuel their passions and promote a youthful appearance. Health is a significant aspect of beauty, and in short, the longer you’re able to remain healthy, the longer you’ll be able to remain attractive, both physically and mentally."
