"The attention given to a mild influenza strain is unbelievable and reactionary"

the reason is to put fear into the general population so they will welcome the so-called food safety govt programs like NAIS
NAIS ( national animal identification system) it requires everyone who owns even one farm animal or horse to register their premises (clouding title to property rights) microchip each critter and file reports on births, deaths and off property movements of all those animals. Just in case disease is suspected the USDA can come in and depopulate the animals.. MNAIS was created solely for the benefit of corporate agriculture so they can sell meat globally and show the world what a safe food supply we have. But factory farms are the ones with the meat full of hormones and antibiotics and most tainting of meat comes AFTER the animal is slaughtered and the meat is mishandled at the processing plant. But corporate ag does not have to chip and track each animal. They get one lot number per group of animals. Any one of those critters could be diseased and who would know. The fact there are many anti-NAIS websites should show the USDA the American livestock owning public does NOT want this program yet they continue to use our tax dollars to influence states to make it mandatory. See nonais.org for more info.

Thanks for the additional information Spence, that's an interesting (and unfortunate) possibility. I'm glad you like the site. :)

I agree about boosting our immunity. That's our first line of defense. The particular strain of H1N1 that's going around now seems to be infecting children and adults in their 20-30's. I read somewhere that those born in the fifties may have been exposed to a similar virus that makes them immune. What I fear is that the virus may recombine, as some microbiologists are suggesting, and create an entirety new strain. But as you pointed out, all the more reason to stay as healthy as possible to keep our immune systems strong. I dig your site.

You're welcome Sam! You're absolutely right, and those serious efforts need to start with our own lifestyle habits!

Thanks Spence! I think it's safe to say we're all hoping you're wrong about the swine flu, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't start working on improving our health and boosting our immunity just in case!

Great article, Vin. Very well-researched. Yeah, the AMA is all about drugs and knives. On Swine Flu - I believe it will come back with a vengeance this fall, just like it did in 1918.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Stephen, that's exactly why I rarely watch or read the news. It's unnecessary stress.

Mark, that's a great point that I didn't think of. It provides even more support for the argument that a unhealthy lifestyle is the true leading cause of death!

Very interesting article.

The government and the news media seem hell bent on scaring people about relatively small health problems and ignore the big ones.

I agreed across the board with your information about the diseases and other maladies except accidents.

Here's what you wrote: "Out of the 8 leading causes of death, only accidents have little to no association with lifestyle habits."

It's my understanding that many of the accidents are caused by people driving under the influence of alcohol. That certainly qualifies as a life threatening life style choice.

Regards,

Great article and I agree 100%. The attention given to a mild influenza strain is unbelievable and reactionary while we have no problem with massive death from other easily controlled factors. The routine stuff isn't sexy enough for the media. People watch scary bad news.
